The NBI Partnership provides non-scientific services to the John Innes Centre (JIC), Quadram Institute Bioscience (QIB), Earlham Institute (EI) and The Sainsbury Laboratory (TSL). All of these organisations carry out scientific research funded by the UK Government, European Union, Charitable and Industrial Sponsors. The Partnership employs around 150 staff to cater for the needs of approximately 1500 Research Staff, Students and Visiting Scientists who are all located in close proximity on the Norwich Research Park.

Main purpose of the job The post holder will supervise and work with the Janitorial team to deliver the service on a day to day basis. The team will provide a support function to the Institutes (JIC, EI and TSL) and other Facilities teams ensuring that the Institutes are provided with a high-level caretaking service and the buildings are kept in good repair. This post will be key in delivering a proactive, comprehensive facilities service
including basic repairs and maintenance works to a good standard, porterage and external/internal building and grounds cleaning.

The successful candidate will have the demonstrable skills required to lead the janitorial team and ensure the delivery of high quality caretaking, porterage, basic repairs, maintenance and grounds cleaning services. Essential requirements to be successful in this role will include:
•     Recent supervisory experience of leading a high performing janitorial team or similar along with recent significant janitorial/ caretaking experience and building repairs/ maintenance skills

•     Detailed knowledge of the relevant legislation and health and safety procedures in relation to janitorial/ caretaking services with ideally an NVQ/ GCSE/ BTEC in relevant building/ construction trades
•     Excellent interpersonal, computing and communication skills and awareness of the importance of delivering high standards of service
•     Willingness to work flexibly on a shift system working additional hours as required/ able to manual handle heavy loads and work at heights.

The role will report to the Soft Facilities Manager.
Main Activities & Responsibilities
Oversee and manage the work and performance of the janitorial team including setting objectives and completing appraisals.
Deliver the team’s performance to meet Key Performance Indicators.
Co-ordinate work in co-operation with science staff and others, to minimise disruption.
Conduct routine basic repairs and maintenance of buildings and glasshouses including associated fixtures and fittings e.g. painting and decorating repairs, replacing carpet tiles, re-fixing shelving, replacing ceiling tiles, light bulb replacement, unblocking drains and toilets etc.
Provide assistance to skilled members of the Facilities team.
Move furniture and equipment etc. within the site (and occasionally off-site) including rearranging furniture for meetings, out of hours functions, setting up for venues etc.
Provide external building cleaning e.g. canopies, foyers, windows, entrances, paths, litter picking, external bin emptying and signage cleaning.
Assist with the internal cleaning e.g. stripping of floors, polishing, spraying and buffing.
Oversee basic fleet car checks and maintenance.
Provide safety support to facilities and Laboratory Managers;

o Ladder/scaffold inspection and safety labelling

o Manual handling training

o Train staff in the use of working at heights equipment e.g. desk surfer.
Work on a shift system during a working day (e.g. start at different times on a weekly rotation basis i.e. 7:00 am, 9:00 am or 11:00am), and participate in a standby out of hours rota.
Ensure that all service calls are completed and closed within the agreed timescale.
Roster weekend works if required by the Institutes.
Car park marshalling duties when requested in connection with site functions.
Prepare risk assessments and SOPs as required.
Occasionally, when requested, deliver mail or parcels
Carry out other tasks as directed by Soft Facilities Manager or Buildings Supervisor.
Any other duties commensurate with the nature of the post.
