NBI Partnership

The NBI Partnership provides non-scientific services to the John Innes Centre (JIC), Quadram Institute Bioscience (QIB), Earlham Institute (EI) and The Sainsbury Laboratory (TSL). All of these organisations carry out scientific research funded by the UK Government, European Union, Charitable and Industrial Sponsors. The Partnership employs around 150 staff to cater for the needs of approximately 1500 Research Staff, Students and Visiting Scientists who are all located in close proximity on the Norwich Research Park.

Main purpose of the job The role provides a support function to the Institutes (JIC, EI and TSL) to ensure that the Institutes are given a high level of caretaking service and the buildings are kept in good repair. The post holder will assist in the provision of a comprehensive facilities service including basic repairs and maintenance works to a good standard, porterage and external/internal building and grounds cleaning.

The successful candidate will have the skills required to carry out all routine tasks required to provide high quality janitorial and caretaking services. This includes porterage, basic repairs, maintenance and grounds cleaning services. Essential requirements to be successful in this role will include:
•     Significant recent experience in a janitorial/ caretaking role along with building repairs and maintenance skills

•     Qualifications in building repairs and maintenance/ construction trades and ideally a fork lift qualification and an NVQ/ GCSE/ BTEC in relevant construction trades
•     Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and awareness of the importance of delivering high standards of service
•     A willingness to work flexibly on a shift system and work additional hours as required/ able to manual handle heavy loads and work at heights.

Key relationships Internal: Senior Janitor, Soft Facilities Manager, members of the cleaning and hard facilities teams
Other: Building and Lab Managers.
The role will report to the Senior Janitor.
Main Activities & Responsibilities
Conduct routine basic repairs and maintenance of buildings and glasshouses including associated fixtures and fittings e.g. painting and decorating repairs, replacing carpet tiles, fixing shelving, replacing ceiling tiles, light bulb replacement, unblocking drains and toilets etc.
Provide assistance to skilled members of the Facilities team
Act as Technician's Labourer e.g. footing ladders, collect/deliver tools, equipment and materials to the workplace
Move furniture and equipment etc. within the site (and occasionally off-site) including rearranging furniture for meetings, out of hours functions, setting up for venues etc
Carry out external building cleaning e.g. canopies, foyers, windows, entrances, paths, litter picking, external bin emptying and signage cleaning
Assist with the internal cleaning e.g. stripping of floors, polishing, spraying and buffing
Clean and provide basic maintenance of institute cars
Provide car park marshalling duties when requested in connection with site functions
Occasionally deliver mail or parcels
Carry out other tasks as directed by Senior Janitor, Soft Facilities Manager or Buildings Supervisor
Work on a shift system during a working day (e.g. start at different times on a weekly rotation basis i.e. 7:00 am, 9:00 am or 11:00am), and participate in a standby out of hours rota.
Salting and gritting of the site as required
As agreed with line manager, any other duties commensurate with the nature of the post
