Job Description

Main Purpose of the Job

Working closely with the Financial Accountant, the General Ledger Accountant has prime responsibility for maintaining the controls for the balance sheets of the NBI institutes and their subsidaries. The successful candidate will promote best practice methods. Other responsibilities include integrity of the institutes' fixed asset registers, cross institute recharges and intercompany accounts.

Key Relationships

The postholder will liaise with fellow Finance colleagues, as well as staff members in Contracts, Human Resources and Computing. They will also liaise with scientists and administrators of the Norwich Bioscience Institutes.

Main Activities & Responsibilities

Routine Accounting Controls:
• Full responsibility for balance sheet reconciliations and controls
• Review and maintenance of general ledger controls

Maintaining the sub ledgers (eg Fixed Assets):
• Carry out fixed asset verifications
• Calculate monthly depreciation
• Post fixed asset additions and disposals
• Assist with capital grant claims

Financial Reporting and Compliance:
• Assistance in preparing statutory accounts for all entities
• Preparing appropriate returns for HM Revenue & Customs (eg VAT)
• Prepare National Statistics returns as required
• Answering queries of auditors, tax authorities and colleagues
• Prepare capital expenditure reports on capital projects

General Ledger Operations:
• Perform month end routines such as accruals and prepayments journals
• Assist with the management of month end close down routines
• Suspense account and inter-company account clearances
• Inter-company cross charging
• Post journals

The role:

The ideal candidate:

Applicants should possess five GCSEs, grades A*-C, or equivalent. A recognised accountancy qualification would be highly desirable. Strong numeric and analytical skills are essential, as is recent experience of working in an accounts role. Candidates should have excellent computer proficiency and attention to detail.

Additional information:

Salary on appointment will be within the range £24,815 to £30,270 per annum depending on qualifications and experience.  This is a fulltime maternity cover contract, expected to last for six months but may be longer or shorter depending when the absent employee returns to work.
