Main Purpose of the Job

The Energy and Environmental Manager will provide leadership in developing and implementing a comprehensive carbon reduction strategy, supporting the organisation’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions. This includes overseeing energy and environmental compliance, driving operational performance optimisation, and promoting engagement across the organisation.

The role involves managing an Environmental Officer, fostering staff development, and leading institutional engagement initiatives, including the LEAF (Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework) accreditation scheme. Additionally, the manager will implement energy and environmental software systems, support the Health and Safety team, and ensure alignment with ISO 14001 standards.

Internal: Environmental Officer, Institute Directors, Finance Representatives, Lab Managers, JIC Chief Operating Officer, Head of Facilities, Health and Safety Team.

External: Energy consultancy firms, suppliers, regulatory bodies, and accreditation bodies (e.g., LEAF and ISO 14001 certification).

Main Activities & Responsibilities

Energy and Environmental Management
• Oversee the effective management of energy systems to ensure optimal plant and equipment performance.
• Develop and implement an institutional engagement plan to promote energy efficiency and sustainability across all levels.
• Lead initiatives to achieve and maintain LEAF accreditation for laboratory operations, driving sustainable practices within research facilities.
• Develop and monitor net zero plans with measurable targets, ensuring alignment with organisational goals.
Compliance and Auditing
• Ensure compliance with all relevant energy and environmental legislation, including statutory reporting requirements.
• Lead internal and external energy and environmental audits, identifying gaps and implementing corrective actions.
• Maintain ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems, ensuring ongoing certification and compliance with best practices.
• Oversee compliance with the Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) scheme, Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) and other mandatory reporting frameworks.
Line Management and Staff Development
• Manage and provide leadership to the Environmental Officer, ensuring alignment with organisational goals.
• Foster staff development by providing training, mentoring, and opportunities for professional growth.
• Build an institutional engagement plan to raise awareness of energy and environmental initiatives among staff and stakeholders.
Technical Governance and Building Optimisation
• Lead the development and implementation of a carbon reduction strategy and governance frameworks.
• Implement methodologies for energy profiling and building optimisation, including HVAC, lighting, and other systems.
• Ensure utility meters are maintained, accurate readings are taken, and energy consumption is routinely monitored.
• Review technical data to identify and address areas of under performance, recommending improvement plans.
Data Analytics and Reporting
• Utilise energy and environmental data to develop insights and actionable recommendations.
• Produce detailed performance reports for stakeholders, highlighting achievements and areas for improvement.
• Implement and manage energy and environmental management software systems to streamline reporting processes.
Investment and Project Management
• Identify investment opportunities based on asset performance data and energy efficiency goals.
• Develop business cases for energy-saving projects, including cost-benefit analysis and risk assessments.
• Oversee the implementation of approved projects, ensuring timely and within-budget delivery.
Stakeholder Engagement and Customer Liaison
• Act as the primary point of contact for internal and external stakeholders on energy and environmental matters.
• Maintain strong relationships with energy consultancy firms, suppliers, and regulatory bodies.
• Ensure staff and institutional stakeholders are informed of energy and environmental performance through regular updates and engagement initiatives.
Health, Safety, and Environmental Impact
• Support the Health and Safety team on energy and environmental matters, ensuring safe systems of work are in place.
• Monitor and address environmental impacts related to laboratory and operational activities.
• Promote a culture of health, safety, and environmental stewardship throughout the organisation.
• Work collectively with the health and safety team to ensure compliance to all environmental consents, license and permits particularly where there is overlap between biological, chemical risk/environmental safety.
Other Duties
• Provide out-of-hours support during emergencies or major incidents as required.
• Undertake other relevant duties as agreed with the line manager, commensurate with the role.

The ideal candidate:

The successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in business, engineering, environmental energy, or a technical discipline. Candidates should either hold an IEMA membership, or be currently working towards completion, and hold a recognised UK energy management qualification, such as those from the Energy Institute (EI) or equivalent professional body.

Candidates should have a comprehensive understanding of energy management principles, as well as detailed knowledge of environmental compliance, auditing, and ISO 14001 standards. The ability to interpret energy and environmental data to develop actionable insights and recommendations is essential to the role, as well as previous expertise in LEAF accreditation and sustainable laboratory operations.

The ideal candidate will also have experience in developing and implementing carbon reduction strategies and governance frameworks and conducting audits and ensuring compliance with environmental legislation.

Additional information:

Salary on appointment will be within the range £44,500 to £55,000 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This is a full-time post offered on an indefinite basis.
